CETMA Cargo bike
Located in Eugene, Oregon, CETMA has always been about hauling cargo on bikes. We started off selling front-mount racks made by CETMA’s founder and owner, Lane Kagay. An ambitious guy, Lane didn’t stop with racks. In 2008 he came up with an interesting innovation. Instead of bolting a heavy box or platform to a heavy central boom tube on a long-john style cargo bike, he built a bike whose cargo platform was integral to and strengthened the frame itself, allowing for much lighter materials than would otherwise be necessary. We bought the very first one. A couple of revisions have occurred over the years, but even CETMA 1.0 had several of our customers hooked.
Some prefer the lighter weight and large open platform of the CETMA cargo bike to that of others in the same general style. The handling feels more familiar to those used to typical road and mountain bikes than some others. What’s more, since the bikes are made locally to order, they can be built up with whatever components best suit your needs and budget.
We find that this bike, as currently developed, is best suited to haul stuff rather than kids. A wooden passenger box is available, but there is so far not a corresponding rain canopy, or refined seating and restraints. We are willing to work on with you on making it a kid hauler, but it takes some custom work to make happen.
Other notable features include an eccentric bottom bracket which allows an internally geared hub to be installed without a chain tensioner. Depending on your preference, or budget, a derailleur can be installed instead. Furthermore, the frame is bi-partable, meaning shipping costs are lower, a definite plus if you travel frequently or are not local.
