Surly Big Dummy

Two or three kids? Six bags of groceries? Garage-sale cooler? The Big Dummy can haul it all.
Based on the tried-and-true Xtracycle platform, the Big Dummy takes family & cargo cycling to the next level. A dedicated single-piece frame instead of an add-on to an existing bike means it’s more stout and resistant to torsional flex. Get one to replace the trips you make with the car and you will end up riding your Big Dummy all the time.
The stock bike is a great starting point; just add pedals and you’re rolling and hauling. Stout wheels and mountain bike gearing will keep you rolling up the steeper hills, even with cargo. Disc brakes stop you smoothly at the bottom.
If you like fenders, hubgears, dynamo lighting, upright riding position, and a leather saddle like we do, we can accommodate. That’s what the frameset is for. Want the ultimate king of the road? With a Stokemonkey, Rohloff, Surly front rack, and every bell and whistle? We’ve done it. How about re-powder coating the frame, rims, and fenders? We’ve done that too. Or maybe something a little cheaper? Try this out.
So haul a kid or two, pick up the groceries: make a Big Dummy part of your life.
