Note: Due to titanium supplier issues, titanium Bromptons are limited in quantity. Please contact us to determine availability. On a Brompton with a superlight frame, the rear triangle, front forks and mudguard stays are made of titanium, while an alloy headset, ultralight front wheel (when no dynamo is selected), and special folding pedal-axle save more weight. The titanium parts on superlight frames are not painted, so only one color choice is possible (for the main frame and the handlebar stem).

Model

handlebar_types
M
The M Type is the most popular Brompton, the distinctive shape of the handlebars having been used since before 1980. The grip height is 1015mm, which gives a fairly upright ride for people under about 6', and there is scope for some fore/aft adjustment.

H
Introduced in 2012, the H Type is for riders taller than about 6', or those who want a quite upright riding position. The height of the grips has been raised 60mm from the M Type, while forward reach increases by around 13mm.

S
This is the lightest and stiffest choice. The grips, at about 935mm from the ground, are appreciably lower than on the M type, and 50mm further forward, giving a sporty riding position for all but the shortest riders. Possible drawbacks include limited front luggage options and a smaller range of fit adjustment than other types.

P
The P Type's handlebars offer two distinct grip positions, high and low. Though a little heavier and flexier than other choices, the lower grips let you cheat the wind and put your back into it, with the upper grips at about 1033mm providing contrast.

Gearing

6
6 Speed (2.63m - 7.94m / 33" - 99")
(for loaded touring or very steep hills)
(quite fast)
The combination of the highly-efficient BWR [Brompton Wide Range] hub with Brompton's own micro-derailleur system gives six evenly-spaced gears, comparable in range to an 11-34T derailleur setup. Control with the two triggers is easy and, with its low transmission losses and wide range, this is the most versatile choice for riding just about anywhere. Clever Cycles sells about 85% 6-speeds!

3
3 Speed (3.79m - 6.76m / 48" - 85")
(easier but slower)
(even more so)
(harder but faster)
The BSR [Brompton Standard Range] is an updated version of the classic Sturmey Archer 3-speed hub in an alloy shell. Fully enclosed for reliability, a good choice for everyday riding in not-too-hilly places.

2
2 Speed (4.45m - 5.93m / 56" - 74")
(easier but slower)
(even more so)
One gear for hills & starting off, and one for cruising. Based on the unique Brompton derailleur system, this is the best gearing solution for lightness and portability. The direct drive, with near-perfect chain alignment in either gear, is quiet and efficient.

1
1 Speed (5.93m / 74")
(easier but slower)
(even more so)
This is the purist's choice, light and trouble-free, though the lack of gear range may make this option unsuitable for hilly terrain.

Mudguards & rear rack

L
Equipped with mudguards, essential for non-fair weather cyclists. Far and away the most popular choice.

R
The die-cast aluminum rack lends the folded bike extra stability and rolling as easy as a giant roller skate. Comes with shock cords and can manage loads up to 10kg. Compatible luggage options are limited, however, and items fixed to the rack prevent the bike from being parked or folded. We usually recommend the rear rack only when the loads to be borne are too much for the excellent front luggage options alone.

CF-BDo the default silver-color mudguards harsh your style? Have us replace them in any other color, as long as those colors are black or white.

E
Going without mudguards lends the bike a sharper appearance and is also the lightest and least expensive option, but there are drawbacks: the folded bike is not as stable, there's no pump and of course no protection from any water or dirt on the road. We've never sold a fenderless bike in rainy Portland.

Seat pillar

SP
The standard seat pillar is the default option; its shorter length keeps the weight down and ensures the most compact folded package. A standard seat pillar should be fine for anyone with an inside leg measurement of 33"/840mm (5'9"-ish) or less. More precisely, with this option the maximum height from pedal face (when furthest from the saddle) and the saddle rails is 85cm, or 92cm to the saddle top with a Brooks B17 or Brompton standard saddle.

SP6
60mm (over 2") longer than the standard seat pillar and a bit heavier, designed for those with longer legs and available at no extra charge. The main drawback is that the seat pillar protrudes correspondingly higher from the folded package.

SPT
Designed for those with an inside leg greater than 35"/890mm or for taller riders wishing to minimize how far the seat pillar protrudes from the folded package. Gives up to 175mm (almost 7 inches) more elevation yet, when lowered, the saddle projects only 20mm above the folded package.

Saddle

BRSSporty, light, practical: this high-quality unisex saddle is Brompton's own design. A profiled grip under the nose facilitates carrying, while the ingenious Brompton Pentaclip allows stepless adjustment of the saddle angle and a large degree of fore-aft adjustment. BRKMBrooks tensioned leather saddles, made in England like Bromptons, are matchlessly beautiful and, for most, the most comfortable available. Taut to a knuckle's tap yet forgiving under body weight, these saddles avoid the heat retention and soft-tissue compression issues endemic to padded saddles, breaking in like leather boots, their initial stiffness yielding to a supple custom fit after a few hundred miles. Brompton offers only model B17 Special in brown, at a good price. Clever Cycles offers a broader selection. All but model B72 supplied with the Brompton Pentaclip seatpost adapter.

Grips

The P-type handlebar cannot use custom grips.

Pedals

folding_pedal
Included standard with every Brompton. Folding left side pedal and non folding drive side pedal. The drive side pedal is not required to fold, as the pedal fits within the envelope of the folded bike.

PMKSPE
Very light, pretty, and with better bearings, these are a solid upgrade from Brompton's stock pedals.

PMKSLE
Also called Grip King. Instead of a left folding pedal, these remove quickly without tools. Designed by Rivendell for MKS in Japan, with a huge supportive platform and inimitable style.

MKS_MM3_EZY
MKS quick release clipless style pedal. Includes cleats.

Tires

TYK
Brompton's standard tire is exceptionally low in rolling resistance, durable yet light. The Kevlar belt under the tread minimizes punctures. Finished with reflective sidewalls. The best all-around choice, we think!

TYM
Marathons are heavier and stiffer than the Brompton tires, presenting a little more rolling resistance, but they are the most durable and puncture-resistant choice. Like the Brompton tires, they come with reflective sidewalls, eliminating the need for reflectors on the wheel spokes.

TYJ
Kojaks feel wonderfully fast and light, but are not particularly durable or puncture resistant. A Kevlar bead also allows it to be folded, making it easy to pack as a spare. Finished with reflective sidewalls.

Rear suspension

Firm_suspension
Firm suspension is more suitable for those weighing over about 150lbs, or those who value responsiveness above cushiness.

Std_suspension
Standard firmness suspension offers a plush ride, especially suitable for light riders. Heavier or more athletic riders may find it disagreeably bouncy.

Lighting

According to Brompton, Clever Cycles sells a much higher percent of dynamo-lit Bromptons than any other US dealer. The best modern bicycle dynamo lighting systems, with LED headlamps for worry-free use even in the daytime, rival car headlamps in brightness (50 lux and up), while the trapezoidal beams won't blind oncoming road users. We think bright, reliable lights should be built in to all but closed-course sporting machines. We now offer several choices not found on the Brompton factory menu, at what we feel are unbeatable price/value points.

HDSHI
Hub dynamos offer a very reliable lighting solution, and this hub dynamo, specifically adapted for Brompton by Shimano, offers very good performance at a low price. Features include a 15-lux Busch & Mueller "Lyt B" front LED lamp and a standlight function at the rear. Headlamp lacks standlight, meaning no light when you stop.

HDSHIBM
Upgrade the "Lyt B" included with the basic Brompton dynamo option to a 30-lux model with daytime running lights, standlight and automatic light-sensing switch.

HDSHIEYC
The new Eyc (rhymes with bike) is tiny yet mighty at 50 lux, with standlight.

HDSHICT
A dazzling 80 lux! With standlight, sensor switch, daytime running mode. This is the most bang for buck combination.

HDSONCT
The SON hub is beautifully engineered and finished, light, highly efficient, and will give years of reliable service. Paired with the newest member of the Cyo family of headlights, over five times as bright as the basic Lyt model.

HDSONEDE
The best of the best. Pairs the best hub with the almost ludicrously bright Schmidt Edelux II headlight, with a super-wide beam and jewel-like finish.

BAT
We think the modern dynamo lighting options above are a no-brainer for year-round use, but battery lighting costs least to start with, and is far better than nothing for occasional night use. The LED rear lamp with integral reflectors is designed specially for Brompton and gives a good bright light: this stays fixed to the bike. At the front is the neat yet powerful S-son 3-LED lamp, easily removed for folding with a quick-release. Batteries are included.

Front luggage

Brompton front luggage is attached via a special frame that latches securely onto a tapered block. It takes a second to attach or release your luggage, and the load is attached directly to the main frame rather than to the steering column, for no adverse effect on handling. Indeed, many people feel that the handling of Bromptons improves with weight borne in a front carrier.

It is not necessary to remove the front luggage when the bike is folded. In fact, the luggage presents a convenient handle to roll the folded bike around on its optional "EZ Wheels" like a cart.

All Brompton-branded front luggage, except the folding basket, comes supplied with a shoulder strap and a high-visibility rainproof cover; secured to luggage using an elasticated hem, its sealed seams help keep luggage dry in heavy rain, and it takes up no room when folded.

TBAG

This bag isn't compatible with the S-type handlebar.

T is for Touring, but we won't tell if you use it for grocery shopping, the daily commute, or transporting several Mini O bags in its cavernous maw. We've fit six 6-packs inside, with two bottles of wine in the back pockets (above advisable max capacity of about 35lbs, but still). This is by far the largest, most versatile, and thereby most popular of the front bags. It features a roll-top system with nylon clips for closing. Zip-up pouch inside and three elasticated net pockets around the outside to stow things for the ride. Capacity approx. 31 liters; 420w x 300h x 270d.

CBAG

This bag isn't compatible with the S-type handlebar.

A messenger-style bag with a Velcro and buckle-fastened flap. A multitude of pockets, finished with water resistant zips, keep those small essentials safe and dry, while a bright lining means an end to searching for small items in the dark recesses of your bag. Capacity 25 liters; dimensions 420w x 300h x 170d.

SBAGH SBAGG SBAG
This smaller messenger-style bag has a low profile and plenty of compartments to store the paraphernalia of modern life. A removable front panel allows the bags to be personalized with different designs. Capacity 20 liters; dimensions 420w x 260h x 170d.

FBSK

This bag isn't compatible with the S-type handlebar.

This is the simplest piece - a large, open-top container, ideal for shopping, stowing a rucksack, or even a mild-mannered pet. Its shape is maintained by a simple bracing frame which folds flat for storage. Drainage holes are provided in case of rain. Capacity 24 liters.

Rear luggage

RKSK

This bag requires that you have a rear rack.

With stiffened sides and built-in Velcro straps to secure it, the Rack Sack is purpose-designed for the Brompton rear rack, offering a very secure, showerproof solution. Capacity 16 liters; comes supplied with a shoulder strap.

Transporting

EZW1 EZW2
Extremely popular, these rollers with industrial bearings can either be fitted to the rear rack, or in place of the rollers attached to the rear frame, allowing the folded bike to be smoothly pushed/pulled around. A rubber bung, fitted to the bottom of the seat post, can be used as a brake to prevent unwanted rolling.

COV1 COV2
A cover is often useful, especially on public transport. The zip-up Brompton Cover is quick to fit and remove and can be drawn tight around the base of the bike using its drawcord. The cover comes in a saddle bag for storage.

BBAG1 BBAG2
Made of tough nylon with 5mm padding to give a degree of protection for your Brompton when traveling. The base is reinforced, and has integral castors: there are extra pockets, and it comes with a shoulder strap as well as carry handles. Packs down flat for storage.

BWBC1 BWBC2
This hard case provides the best protection for your Brompton. It is however ever-so-slightly larger than regulation airline size, and around 20lbs, so depending on the disposition of the attendant, you might face oversize or overweight charges. With telescoping handle and easy-rolling wheels.

Extras

BTOOL1
Fitting snugly inside the front frame section, the Brompton Toolkit includes everything needed for most roadside adjustments and repairs: tire levers; 15, 10, and 8mm wrenches; ratchet driver; flat and Philips screwdriver bits; 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, and 6mm hex bits; glueless tube patches and sandpaper.

ABORD1Some argue that no lock is necessary with Bromptons, since they fold up to come with you into shops, offices, restaurants, and the like. For others that ideal is unrealistic, at least some of the time. Certain ABUS Bordo folding combination locks fit discreetly out of the way within the folded bike's profile behind the seat tube, after we reverse the rear frame clip lever. More security than a cable, with more flexible reach than U-types.
