Dollar for dollar, pound for pound, inch for inch, we think Xtracycles are the best, most versatile way to carry most of what most households need to carry day to day.
The Xtracycle FreeRadical is a hitchless trailer. It bolts on to existing bicycles, moving the rear wheel back about 18 inches. A giant rack then straddles the rear wheel, with room for 6 bags of groceries and 2 kids at the same time. Or a kayak and a ladder, or any of a thousand other things up to 200 pounds. There are no moving parts, no extra wheels, and it rides beautifully.
Convert or buy new? While almost any bike can be converted to an Xtracycle, some are better than others, and some are just plain bad. For example, bikes with light 700c wheels are generally poor candidates as family haulers in Portland, because there’s not enough clearance for a suitably fat tire and fender. We won’t install on bikes with suspension forks. Certain brake style limitations exist, and heavily worn drivetrains may need partial replacement. To find out if your bike is good for a conversion, it’s usually best to bring the bike here. We’ll go over it, give you detailed advice, and a conversion quote if appropriate. $100 is our base conversion cost. Usually we have plenty of complete Xtracycles ready to test or purchase, too.
