Batteries
Stokemonkey will work with any battery pack capable of sustaining 20 amps at 36 volts. Unlike the developers of most electric bike products, we have deliberately avoided any proprietary battery requirements to protect your investment and give you more price/performance choices.
After sourcing, assembling, selling and supporting our own battery packs for several years, we are now stepping aside to let third parties fulfill these functions.
The most desirable (lithium) batteries for electric bike applications are increasingly classed as “class 9 dangerous goods” for shipping purposes. The stringent handling and certification requirements for shipping these items legally are such that only higher-volume, dedicated battery providers can engage in this business sustainably.
Note: As of mid-April 2011, it appears that the US Department of Transportation has made it more difficult for sellers of high capacity lithium batteries to ship their products within the US. Please confirm availability status with your battery vendor before proceeding with Stokemonkey purchase.
Some battery suppliers we know are:
- Headway in Issaquah, Washington. High quality, high capacity lithium packs; will ship! Note that these packs require a case or padded bag for physical protection in the Xtracycle slings; ask.
- Grin Technologies
4570 Main St.
Vancouver, BC
Canada V5V 3R5
- Ping Battery. Great bang-for-buck and reputation for support unusual with Chinese suppliers. Please note that these come with no enclosure — just shrink-wrapped raw cells — and only bare wires. If you are comfortable making your own protective enclosure and doing all your own wiring, they are worth a look.
