Guide to Brompton Rear Racks

A rear rack can be added to any Brompton model. It will increase cargo capacity, stabilize the bike when folded, and make it roll better in the folded position. Because Bromptons are so compact, rear panniers will not fit. Instead the rack is useful as a platform for rack-top bags, cases of soda, or small pizzas. You will need to remove whatever is on the rack when folding or parking in kickstand mode. It is worth noting that adding a rack will marginally increase the folded size and weight of the bicycle.

We stock authentic Brompton factory racks and several distinct aftermarket versions.

If your Brompton doesn’t have a rack (or a fender that is compatible with one), then you’ll need to swap out your rear fender. The correct fender for installing a rack has two metal brackets riveted to the fender blade, as opposed to one. If your fender has one riveted metal bracket and affixes via three metal stays that bolt to the frame near the rear axle, then you have what was previously known as the L type fender and will need to swap out your rear fender with the rack-specific one or the R type fender. Brompton’s rack comes with this fender in a kit, aftermarket racks don’t.

Brompton Racks

Brompton’s rear rack comes in two colors, silver and black. You can choose either color when adding a rack, but the default is silver for C Line and A Line bikes and black for Black Edition and Electric C Line bikes. Brompton’s rack is made of forged aluminum. Aluminum is less dense than steel, so if you're looking for a lighter rack, the Brompton version is a great choice. Brompton’s rear rack comes in a kit with roller wheels, rack-compatible rear fender, and all required hardware and instructions making this the easiest package for at-home installation. Brompton’s rack weighs around 564 grams (about 1.2 pounds) and carries up to 22 pounds. Compatible with C Line, Electric C Line, and A Line.

Brompton Advance Roller Rack

P Line and T Line Bromptons require the Advance Roller Rack because the rear frame is different on those models. The difference in rear frames means the Advance Roller Rack isn’t compatible with C Line, Electric C Line, and other models. The Advance Roller rack comes in black. It weighs around 340 grams and carries up to 22 pounds. Compatible with P Line, Electric P Line, and T Line.

Aftermarket Brompton Racks for C Line and A Line

Nitto Chromoly Steel Rack

Steel is more durable than aluminum at the expense of weight. The Nitto rack is about one third of a pound heavier than the standard Brompton rack, but if you’re looking for the most durable rack for your Brompton, we think you’ll be happy with the Nitto rack. It’s sleek with a distinctive aesthetic heft. It doesn't come with a reflector or light bracket, but we make a light bracket in house that can be added for an extra charge. The Nitto rack comes in two colors, silver and black, and weighs around 735 grams. Requires a rear R type fender, sold separately. Only compatible with C Line and A Line.

Lightweight Aluminum Rack for Brompton

This rack is significantly lighter than the Brompton rack. Sold ala carte, so you can customize with whichever roller wheels work best for you. We recommend a full set of Easy Wheels for buttery smooth rolling. For securing cargo, a cargo net, or tie down straps are the best option, as this rack is not compatible with Brompton’s bungee system. To use this rack with a rear fender requires modifying the L type fenderset. The lightweight aluminum rack comes in black or silver and weighs around 297 grams. Only compatible with C Line and A Line.

Brompton Triangular Minimalist Aluminum Rack

By far the smallest of the bunch, the minimalist rack is the lightest rack we sell for Bromptons. This is the best choice to keep your Brompton as light as possible while achieving the stability a rack provides to the folded bike. Don’t forget roller wheels as they’re sold separately. We recommend a full set of Easy Wheels for buttery smooth rolling. Please note, this rack will only work with a heavily customized rear fender, and is not compatible with Brompton’s bungee system. The minimalist rack weighs around 141 grams and has a load weight limit of 44 pounds. It comes in silver and black. Only compatible with C Line and A Line.
