Here’s how Clever Cycles is supporting our neighbors and community partners, working together with them to make our city even better.
We Support:
Safe and Convenient Walking, Biking, and Transit
The Street Trust is a Portland-based non-profit working to make Oregon a better place to walk, bike, and ride public transit. That means safe crosswalks, protected bike lanes, and convenient transit options. We offer a discount on parts and accessories to members of The Street Trust, but our support doesn’t end there. We help by donating goods and services such as bicycles, gift certificates, and tune ups. As a sponsor of events benefiting The Street Trust, our in-kind donations help raise money for The Street Trust, so that they can keep fighting for safe streets, and we can get more people riding bikes. Our very own Eva Frazier shared her story at the ninth annual Love In Motion storytelling event, which raised more than 25k for The Street Trust. The Street Trust’s events bring our community together and further their mission, because walking, biking, and transit should be safe and convenient for everyone.
Education
Our kids are our future. By donating money to support local Portland schools, we’ve helped prepare students from Woodhaven, Beach, Sabin, Atkinson, Beverly Cleary, Irvington, Glencoe, Laurelhurst, Abernethy, Sojourner, Madison, and Franklin to lead change and improve the world.
Healthy Active Living
A Portland tradition since 2008, Sunday Parkways opens Portland streets to folks by closing them to cars for one Sunday a month all summer long. Sunday Parkways lets Portlanders walk, bike, roll, and explore Portland’s neighborhoods with food, activities, and entertainment along the way. We wouldn’t miss it for the world. It’s the first ride of the year for some, so we see a lot of tires in need of air and squeaky chains at the Clever Cycles booth. We’ll pump up your tires, lube your chain, fix a flat, or make an adjustment. Whatever you need to get rolling.
Healthy Vibrant Neighborhoods
PARK(ing) Day happens worldwide in September and gives folks the opportunity to re-envision how we use our public space. Here in Portland, the Portland Bureau of Transportation issues PARK(ing) Day permits to allow Portlanders to temporarily transform parking spaces into public spaces. In 2019, we turned a parking spot on the south side of Hawthorne Boulevard adjacent to 9th Avenue into a tiny art and writing studio.
Community Dialogue
Community conversation generates relationships and ideas, and it can happen anywhere, including your local bike shop. Clever Cycles fosters community dialogue by hosting community events that provide opportunities for Portlanders to engage with our local leaders. Portland City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty and Executive Director of The Street Trust and Portland mayoral candidate, Sarah Iannarone have participated in our open house events, engaging in dialogue about issues that are important to the bike community.
We can always count on our local news outlet and community resource, BikePortland, to help foster productive dialogue. It is after all part of their mission. BikePortland is a vital part of the transportation conversation in Portland and beyond and a great source for local events that bring our community together. For those reasons—and so many more—we donate to BikePortland regularly. BikePortland has been informing our community and connecting people since 2005.
Keeping Portlanders Rolling
Bike Farm is a space where people can learn about bikes and how to fix them. It’s a collective run entirely by volunteers. They sell used parts and have a rotating inventory of refurbished bikes for sale. They provide a safer space for women and gender minorities and teach everything from wheelchair maintenance to bike touring to wheel truing. We provide parts and tool donations to Bike Farm to support their mission to demystify the bicycle, because putting tools in people’s hands impacts our city in a healthy and positive way.
