HSA/FSA accounts were created so individuals could use pre-tax money to pay for expenses used to treat, mitigate, or prevent a diagnosed medical condition.
Because HSA/FSAs use pre-tax money, you're getting more purchasing power for your dollars. Rather than pay taxes on income and then spend it on health items, qualified customers can use pre-tax funds to invest in root cause interventions.
Truemed is a financial technology company that makes it possible to use pre-tax HSA and FSA funds for health-focused products like bikes and ebikes. They work with licensed medical practitioners to issue Letters of Medical Necessity, which qualify your purchase as a reimbursable health expense. Clever Cycles has partnered with Truemed to give our customers a smarter way to pay for a bike — and keep more money in their pocket.
Find the Truemed logo during checkout. Exit the 'Shop Pay" pop-up if prompted.
Take a quick, private health survey. A licensed provider will review your answers to determine eligibility.
Pay with your HSA/FSA card or a credit card. If you use a regular credit card, follow the guide included with your LMN to submit your purchase for reimbursement.
HSA/FSA FAQ
What are HSA and FSA accounts?
Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) are employer- or individually-sponsored programs that let you set aside pre-tax money for eligible health-related expenses. Not sure if you have one? Check with your employer or insurance provider.
How does paying with my HSA or FSA save me money?
HSA and FSA accounts let you use pre-tax dollars for qualified health expenses — which means your money goes further. Instead of earning income, paying taxes on it, and then buying a bike, you're spending dollars that were never taxed in the first place. Depending on your tax bracket, that's typically a 20–35% savings on your purchase.
Does riding a bike actually qualify as a medical expense?
Yes — with proper documentation. The IRS recognizes exercise as a qualified medical expense when supported by a Letter of Medical Necessity from a licensed provider. There's extensive research showing that regular physical activity prevents and reverses chronic disease. Truemed connects you with a licensed practitioner who reviews your situation and, if appropriate, issues that letter.
Which bikes and products at Clever Cycles are eligible?
Ebikes and bikes used for exercise and active transportation are the primary eligible products. Accessories directly related to your riding (helmets, safety gear) may also qualify. Truemed's survey will confirm eligibility based on your specific situation.
What is a Letter of Medical Necessity?
A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) is a document from a licensed medical provider confirming that a product is appropriate for treating, mitigating, or preventing a diagnosed health condition. Your Truemed LMN satisfies IRS requirements to make your purchase reimbursable through your HSA or FSA.
Can I swipe my HSA or FSA card directly at Clever Cycles?
We don't recommend it. For compliance reasons, the best approach is to pay with a regular credit or debit card at checkout, then submit for reimbursement through your HSA or FSA administrator using your receipt and a Letter of Medical Necessity from Truemed.
What are the steps to get reimbursed?
Start by completing Truemed's short online qualification survey (there is a small fee). If approved, you'll receive a Letter of Medical Necessity. From there, make your purchase at Clever Cycles with a regular credit or debit card, then submit your receipt and Letter of Medical Necessity to your HSA or FSA administrator to receive your reimbursement.
How long does reimbursement take?
Most administrators process claims within a few days once you submit your receipt and Letter of Medical Necessity. Exact timing varies by administrator.
Do I have to complete the Truemed survey every time I buy something?
No. Once you have a valid LMN, you can use it for future purchases without retaking the survey — LMNs are typically valid for 12 months. You'll still need to submit your receipt to your administrator each time.
Are there any fees to use Truemed?
Truemed charges a small fee at the end of their qualification survey.
When should I use my FSA funds?
Any time — but keep in mind that FSA dollars typically expire on December 31st and unused funds usually don't roll over. If you have FSA money sitting around at the end of the year, a bike or ebike is a great way to put it to work before you lose it.
How much can I contribute to my HSA or FSA?
For 2026, individuals can contribute up to $4,400 to an HSA ($8,750 for a family, plus an additional $1,000 if you're 55 or older). FSA contributions are capped at $3,400 per year.
What if I don't have enough in my account to cover the full purchase?
No problem — you can submit for partial reimbursement. For example, if your bike costs $1,500 and you have $800 in your account, you can reimburse $800 tax-free and pay the remaining $700 as normal.
Can I use Truemed to get reimbursed for a bike I already purchased?
It depends on your administrator's policies. To be safe, we recommend only submitting expenses incurred on or after the date listed on your Letter of Medical Necessity.
What if my reimbursement is rejected?
Contact Truemed at support@truemed.com. Many rejections come down to a formatting issue that can be resolved by reissuing the LMN on your administrator's preferred form. If Truemed can't resolve it, they'll refund their fee.
What if I'm not approved for a Letter of Medical Necessity?
Not everyone will qualify — approval depends on your health history and the licensed practitioner's assessment. If you're not approved, you won't be charged Truemed's fee.
Who do I contact with questions about my HSA or FSA account?
For questions about your specific account, contribution limits, or reimbursement status, contact your HSA or FSA administrator directly. For questions about the Truemed process, reach out to support@truemed.com.
