The Clever Cycles Electric Bike Buying Guide
Flatten the hills. Shrink the distance. Love the ride.
Ride more. Drive less.
Why Go Electric?
An electric bike doesn’t change how a bike works — it changes how much of your life a bike can carry. Hills flatten, headwinds disappear, five miles feels like one, and you arrive without needing a shower. That’s why e-bike riders ride more often and farther than they ever did unassisted: errands, commutes, and school runs quietly stop being car trips.
Clever Cycles has helped thousands of riders go electric. We stock proven, serviceable e-bikes from brands like Tern, Gazelle, Urban Arrow, and Brompton — and this guide will help you find the right one, wherever in the country you ride.
Commutes & everyday errands
Electric City Bikes
The everyday workhorse: upright and comfortable, with fenders, lights, and racks built in, ready for real weather and real errands. Step-through frames make stopping and starting effortless in traffic.
- Dutch-style comfort from Gazelle — Bosch-powered city bikes refined over more than a century of bike building.
- The compact, low-step Tern NBD — one of the easiest-to-mount e-bikes anywhere, great for shorter riders.
- Budget-friendly options like the Fuji Boulevard EVO to get you rolling for less.
Kids, groceries & car replacement
Electric Cargo Bikes
If the goal is carrying kids, a week of groceries, or genuinely replacing a car, you want a cargo bike: midtails like the Tern HSD, longtails like the Tern GSD, and front loaders like the Urban Arrow all pair big hauling capacity with Bosch power.
This is the category we know best — we were the first shop in the U.S. to specialize in cargo bikes, and we wrote a whole guide on choosing one.
Small spaces & mixed transit
Electric Folding Bikes
Live in an apartment, ride the train, or want a bike that travels in the car trunk? A folding e-bike gives you electric power in a package that stores anywhere. The Bosch-powered Tern Vektron folds in about ten seconds, and the iconic Brompton Electric folds smaller than any other e-bike we sell — small enough to carry into the office.
The Technology, Explained
Three things determine how an e-bike rides: the motor, the battery, and the class.
Mid-drive vs. hub
Motors
Most bikes we stock use a Bosch mid-drive motor — the industry benchmark. Mounted at the pedals, a mid-drive works through the bike’s gears, so it climbs steep hills even fully loaded and responds to your pedaling so naturally it feels like your own legs on a very good day.
A hub motor, built into the wheel, is simpler and lighter on the wallet — it’s what keeps the Brompton Electric featherweight and the Segway MUXI affordable. For flatter routes and lighter loads, a good hub motor is all you need.
Range & charging
Batteries
Battery size is measured in watt-hours (Wh) — more watt-hours, more range. Real-world range depends on hills, load, and assist level, but most riders get a full week of commuting and errands from a charge. Every e-bike we sell has a removable battery, so you can charge at your desk or in the kitchen — no outlet in the garage required. Hauling heavy every day? The Tern GSD accepts dual batteries for all-day range.
Stick with major-brand battery systems like Bosch: they’re UL-certified, supported for years, and serviceable at shops across the country — including ours.
Know the rules
E-Bike Classes
U.S. e-bikes fall into three classes. Class 1 assists while you pedal, up to 20 mph — welcome nearly everywhere a bike is. Class 2 adds a throttle, also to 20 mph. Class 3 assists while you pedal up to 28 mph — a genuine car replacement for longer commutes. Most bikes we sell are Class 1 or Class 3, and many can be configured either way. We’ll help you pick the class that fits your routes and local rules.
