The Tern Folding Bike Buying Guide
Ride it anywhere. Fold it in seconds. Take it everywhere.

Big-Bike Ride, Small-Bike Footprint
A folding bike solves the problems a regular bike can’t: it rides the train and the bus with you, tucks under your desk instead of locking up outside, stows in an apartment closet, and fits in a car trunk without a rack. Clever Cycles has specialized in folding bikes since 2007, and Tern is one of the brands we know best — we build, fit, and service the full range.
This guide walks through every Tern family we carry so you can find the one that fits your life. Riding somewhere far from Portland? No problem — we ship folding bikes across the country.
Find your fit
Meet the Tern Families
Every Tern folds in about ten seconds, but each family folds for a different life. The Link is the everyday workhorse. The BYB folds smallest of all. The Node and Eclipse bring full-size wheels to the folding frame. The Verge adds low-maintenance refinement. And the Vektron is the electric one — a Bosch-powered folder that flattens hills.
The everyday workhorse
Link — The Classic Commuter
The Link is the folding bike most people picture: quick-folding 20″ wheels, an upright, confident ride, and a telescoping handlepost that fits a whole household of riders on one bike.
- Folds in about ten seconds for the bus, the train, or the hall closet.
- Rack- and fender-ready for real commuting in real weather.
- Best for daily commuters, multimodal riders, and first-time folders.
Examples we carry: the value-packed Link B8, the go-to Link C8 and Link D8, and the low-maintenance Link D7i with an internally geared hub and dynamo lighting.
The smallest fold
BYB — Packs Down Smallest
BYB stands for “Bring Your Bike” — and you really can bring it anywhere. Its clever double-fold packs about 30% smaller than a typical 20″ folder, parks standing up on its own, and rolls along beside you when folded.
- The most compact fold in the Tern range — ideal for trains, small apartments, and boat or RV life.
- Rolls on its rack while folded, so you push it instead of carrying it.
- Best for travelers, tight spaces, and mixed-transit commutes.
Examples we carry: the BYB P8, the lighter BYB P10, and the top-of-line BYB S11.
Full-size wheels, folding frame
Node & Eclipse — The Big-Wheel Folders
Prefer the feel of full-size wheels? The Node rolls on 24″ wheels and the Eclipse on 26″, so they ride like conventional bikes — stable, smooth over rough pavement, and roomy for taller riders — yet still fold flat for the closet or the car trunk.
- Bigger wheels smooth out potholes and hold speed better than small-wheel folders.
- A natural fit for taller riders who find 20″ folders cramped.
- Best for riders who want one bike that rides “normal” but stores small.
Examples we carry: the Node D8 and the Eclipse D16, with higher-spec Eclipse models available to order.
Low maintenance, high refinement
Verge — The Refined One
The Verge is Tern’s performance line, and the S8i we stock is the ultimate low-maintenance commuter: a grease-free Gates belt drive instead of a chain, a Shimano Alfine 8-speed internal hub you can shift at a standstill, and built-in dynamo lighting that never needs charging.
- Belt drive means no chain grease on your work clothes — ever.
- Internal gearing and sealed components shrug off rain and grit.
- Best for year-round commuters who want to ride, not wrench.
Example we carry: the Verge S8i.
The electric one
Vektron — The Folding E-Bike
The Vektron is what happens when a folding bike stops acting like a compromise: a genuine Bosch mid-drive e-bike that still folds in about ten seconds. It flattens hills, shrugs off headwinds, and its sturdy rear rack even takes a child seat or panniers — real utility in a package that fits in a car trunk.
- Bosch mid-drive power — the same motor family trusted on our cargo bikes.
- Removable battery charges at your desk or in the kitchen.
- Best for hilly commutes, longer rides, and anyone who wants to arrive fresh.
Examples we carry: the Vektron Q9, the fourth-generation Vektron P5i, and the sporty Vektron S10.
Life With a Folding Bike
The fold is only the beginning — here’s how it changes your day.
No bike rack. No bike theft.
The Ten-Second Fold
Fold at the bus stop, board with everyone else, and unfold at the other end — a folding bike turns transit, carpools, and park-and-ride into one seamless trip. At work it slides under your desk instead of gambling on a street rack, and at home it lives in a closet, not the hallway. No roof rack, no hitch, no worries.
One bike, every rider
Fit for the Whole Household
Tern’s telescoping handlepost and long seatpost adjust in seconds without tools, so one folding bike genuinely fits riders of very different heights. It’s the rare bike a couple can honestly share — and when you visit us, we’ll dial in the fit for everyone who’ll ride it.
Fly with your bike
Travel & Storage Gear
The right accessories make the fold even more useful. The Stow Bag slips over a folded bike for discreet transit rides and clean car trunks, while the suitcase-style AirPorter Slim lets a BYB check onto a flight like regular luggage. Racks, baskets, and bags round out the kit — browse all Tern folding accessories.
