Tern GSD vs Riese & Müller: An Honest Comparison for US Cargo Bike Buyers
If you are shopping for a premium electric cargo bike in the $6,000 to $10,000 range, the Tern GSD and Riese & Müller's Multicharger and Load models probably both landed on your shortlist. They are the two names that come up most in serious cargo bike research, and for good reason. Both are engineered to replace a car.
Let's be upfront: Clever Cycles does not carry Riese & Müller, and we never have. We do carry the Tern GSD, along with Urban Arrow and Benno, and we have put thousands of families on cargo bikes since 2007. This comparison is based on what we see in the field, what customers tell us after cross-shopping both brands, and one hard fact that changes the whole equation for US buyers: Riese & Müller withdrew from the US market in 2026.
The R&M US Exit: What It Means for You
Riese & Müller builds excellent bikes. But with the brand out of the US market, buying one here means owning an orphaned platform. Proprietary parts like frames, racks, dual-battery harnesses, and R&M-specific mounts have no domestic supply chain. Warranty support is uncertain at best.
A cargo bike is a working vehicle. It hauls your kids to school in the rain, carries groceries up hills, and racks up thousands of miles a year. A working vehicle needs parts and service you can count on. That is the single biggest reason we steer buyers toward the Tern GSD, which has a fully supported US dealer network and a deep, actively developed accessory ecosystem.
Design Philosophy: Compact vs Full-Size
The Tern GSD P00 Gen 3 is a compact longtail. It rides on 20-inch wheels, is shorter than a standard bike, and fits one rider from roughly 4'11" to 6'5" with a quick seatpost and stem adjustment. That means one bike genuinely serves two parents. It also stands vertically on its rear rack for storage in apartments, garages, and elevators, and it rolls onto light rail without drama.
Riese & Müller's Multicharger is a full-size longtail with a bigger footprint, and the Load is a front-loading box bike. They ride beautifully, but they do not share the GSD's compact storage tricks, and each frame size fits a narrower range of riders. If two adults of different heights will share the bike, the GSD wins decisively.
Cargo Capacity and Passengers
The GSD Gen 3 carries a maximum gross vehicle weight of 200 kg (about 440 lb), with a rear rack rated for two child seats or two older kids on the bench. Add the Tern GSD Clubhouse + for secure passenger rails, and the Transporteur front rack for another 20 kg up front. R&M's Multicharger posts similar rear capacity numbers, so on paper this category is close. In practice, the GSD's lower deck height and smaller wheels put the load lower, which makes a fully loaded bike noticeably easier to handle at stops and low speeds.
Drive Systems: Bosch on Both, but Different Generations
Both brands build around Bosch motors, so raw power is comparable. The difference is currency. The GSD Gen 3 runs the Bosch Smart System with the Cargo Line motor (85 Nm), wireless connectivity through the Bosch Flow app, over-the-air updates, and available dual batteries for up to around 200 km of range. Because R&M is no longer shipping US bikes, any R&M you find here is stuck on whatever Bosch generation it shipped with, with no dealer pathway for system updates or battery replacements.
The GSD also ships with hydraulic four-piston brakes sized for cargo duty, and consumables are easy to source. We stock Kool-Stop eBike compound pads for the GSD's Magura four-piston brakes, which matters when you are descending long grades with 100 lb of kids and groceries behind you.
Pricing
The GSD Gen 3 lineup runs roughly $5,000 to $9,000 depending on drivetrain and battery configuration. R&M's comparable models sold for $7,500 to $12,000 before the US exit, and remaining stock or used examples carry the parts-availability risk baked in. Dollar for dollar, the GSD delivers more supported capability. We offer financing, so you can spread the cost over time rather than paying everything upfront.
Accessories and Weather Protection
Tern's accessory catalog for the GSD is enormous and still growing: front racks, panniers, decks, foot pegs, seat pads, wheel guards, and child weather canopies. For year-round family hauling in rainy climates, the Storm Shield keeps rear passengers dry, and the Cargo Hold panniers swallow a full grocery run per side. We stock these parts on our shelves at 900 SE Hawthorne Blvd, and we can order anything in the Tern catalog. That is the practical difference between a supported platform and an orphaned one.

Other Alternatives We Carry
If you were drawn to the R&M Load's front-box format, the Urban Arrow Family is the closest equivalent and, in our view, the best front-loader you can buy in the US today. It carries kids in front of you in an EPP foam box with the same Bosch Cargo Line power. If you want something lighter and more bike-like than either, the Benno Boost is a midtail that hauls two kids or serious cargo while still feeling nimble.
Ride One Before You Decide
Spec sheets only get you so far. The way a loaded cargo bike feels pulling away from a stop, climbing a steep grade, or threading a tight corner is what actually sells these bikes. We keep the Tern GSD, Urban Arrow, and Benno built and ready to ride at our shop on Hawthorne in Portland. Bring your kids, bring your cargo, and take them up a real hill. Come test ride a GSD at Clever Cycles and you will know within ten minutes whether it is your next family vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. Clever Cycles is not and has never been a Riese & Müller dealer, and Riese & Müller withdrew from the US market in 2026. We carry the Tern GSD, Urban Arrow, and Benno as the closest equivalents.
For US buyers, yes in practical terms. The GSD Gen 3 offers comparable Bosch power and 200 kg capacity, costs less, and has full US parts, warranty, and dealer support, which R&M no longer offers after exiting the US market in 2026.
With R&M out of the US market, proprietary parts and warranty support are uncertain and increasingly hard to source. Standard components like Bosch motors and brakes can still be serviced, but frame-specific and R&M-specific parts have no reliable domestic supply.
GSD Gen 3 models run roughly $5,000 to $9,000 depending on drivetrain and battery configuration. Clever Cycles offers financing so you can spread the cost over time.
