Why the GSD Has to Come From a Bosch-Certified Dealer
The Tern GSD Gen 3 runs on the Bosch Cargo Line motor with the Smart System. Bosch restricts diagnostics, firmware updates, motor warranty claims, and battery service to certified dealers with the official diagnostic tools. Buy a GSD from a gray-market seller or an uncertified shop and you can lose warranty coverage and access to critical software updates.
We are a Bosch-certified service center. Every GSD we sell gets a full pre-delivery inspection, torque check on the frame and Atlas rack, and a firmware update before it leaves the floor. When you come back for service, we can pull error codes, update the drive unit, and handle warranty work in-house.

The Tern GSD P00 Gen 3 is the workhorse of the range, pairing the Bosch Cargo Line motor with a low-maintenance drivetrain that shrugs off Portland's nine months of rain. Higher-spec Gen 3 models add features like the Enviolo stepless hub and Gates belt drive, which we recommend to anyone commuting daily through the wet season, since a belt does not rust, stretch, or need lubrication. What a Test Ride Looks Like Here
Reading spec sheets tells you almost nothing about how a longtail cargo bike actually handles. We will set the saddle height, walk you through the Bosch display and ride modes, and send you out for as long as you need.
If you are shopping for family hauling, bring the kids. We can mount a Tern GSD Clubhouse or child seat on a demo bike so you feel the loaded handling before you buy, because a GSD with 80 pounds of children on the back rides very differently than an empty one. Test the low-speed balance, the hill-start behavior on an incline, and the brakes under load. That is the honest way to choose a cargo bike.
GSD vs HSD: Which One for Your Riding?
We stock both, and we steer people between them constantly. The GSD is the full cargo bike: 441 lb capacity, room for two child seats or two Clubhouse passengers, dual battery capability for 100-plus mile range, and enough rack real estate to replace a car for groceries, daycare runs, and hardware store trips.
The HSD is the three-quarter scale version: one child passenger, 396 lb capacity, lighter and shorter, easier to maneuver in a small apartment or up a stoop. If you have one kid and tight storage, the HSD is often the smarter buy. If you have two kids, haul bulky loads, or want maximum range for long days across town, get the GSD. Both use the same low step-through geometry, which matters when you are stopping and starting on hills with a load.
Built for Hills and Rain
Portland's east side is flat, but Council Crest, the West Hills, and Mt. Tabor are not, and the Bosch Cargo Line's 85 Nm of torque is what makes a fully loaded GSD climb them without drama. The 20-inch wheels keep the load low, so crosswinds on the bridges and greasy leaves in November are far less sketchy than on a tall-wheeled cargo bike.
For wet-season family duty, the Tern Storm Shield encloses the Clubhouse area and keeps kids dry through winter, and it is the single accessory that turns the GSD into a genuine year-round car replacement. Front cargo capacity comes from the Tern GSD Transporteur Rack, which mounts to the frame rather than the fork, so a loaded front basket does not affect steering.
