Clever Cycles sits at 900 SE Hawthorne Blvd, on the corner of SE 9th and Hawthorne, in the heart of inner Southeast Portland. We are a short ride from almost anywhere on the inner eastside. Cyclists in Sellwood, Brooklyn, Mt. Tabor, Laurelhurst, and Kerns visit us regularly, and riders come from across the river and from Alberta and Mississippi when they want the specific bikes we carry. That is because we are not a general bike shop. We specialize in transportation cycling: cargo bikes, electric bikes, folding bikes, and city bikes built for daily use in a rainy, hilly city.

How to Find Us and Get Here

Our storefront is at 900 SE Hawthorne Blvd, between SE 9th and 10th Avenues. We are easy to reach by bike from the Hawthorne Bridge, the SE Ladd Avenue greenway through Ladd's Addition, the SE Ankeny greenway, and the SE Clinton greenway a few blocks south.

By transit, the number 14 bus runs directly past our door on Hawthorne, and the 4, 10, and 15 lines all stop within a few blocks. There is street parking on the surrounding blocks if you are driving in, and plenty of bike parking out front if you are riding.

Bring your questions and plan to test ride. We keep demo bikes charged and ready, and the flat blocks of the Central Eastside plus the gentle rise up Hawthorne toward Sunnyside give you a realistic feel for how a bike handles loaded, unloaded, uphill, and in traffic.

What Makes Clever Cycles Different from Other Portland Bike Shops

Most bike shops carry a little of everything. We went deep on one idea instead: bikes that replace car trips. Every brand on our floor was chosen because it holds up to daily commuting, school runs, grocery hauls, and Portland weather.

We also stock Tern, including the GSD and HSD compact cargo bikes and the Quick Haul, and Gazelle's Dutch city e-bikes like the Ultimate and Medeo, built with fenders, lights, and racks included because Dutch riders, like Portland riders, ride in the rain.

For low-maintenance city riding, Priority bikes use belt drives and internally geared hubs, so there is no chain to lube and nothing to rust through a wet winter. For riders who want to get out of the city, Salsa covers gravel and bikepacking. Built for Portland Riding: Rain, Hills, and Bridges

Inner Southeast is mostly flat, but Portland riding rarely stays flat. Mt. Tabor, the climb up to Richmond and beyond on Division and Hawthorne, and the West Hills across the river all reward a bike with real gearing or a solid mid-drive motor. The Bosch systems on the Urban Arrow, Gazelle, Tern, and Benno bikes we sell handle loaded climbs without strain, and we can talk you through which motor and battery pairing fits your routes.

Rain is the other reality. Nearly every bike we sell comes with full fenders, integrated lights, and a rear rack as standard equipment, not add-ons. If you are commuting from Sunnyside to downtown across the Hawthorne Bridge in November, that matters every single day.

Service, Test Rides, and Financing

Our service department works on the bikes we sell and the systems we know: Bosch e-bike diagnostics, Brompton folding hardware, internally geared hubs, belt drives, and cargo bike components that general shops rarely see. Test rides are free and encouraged. Cargo bikes and e-bikes are significant purchases, and the only way to choose well is to ride several back to back. We will load a demo bike with weight if you want to feel what a real grocery run or two-kid pickup is like.

We also offer financing, so a bike that replaces a car, or a second car, can be paid for the way a car would be, in monthly installments that are usually far less than a car payment, insurance, and gas combined.
