Description
The right-length chain for a Brompton G Line, without paying for a Brompton box — and a plain, no-frills 9-speed chain for any other bike that takes one. Yes, 9-speed: that's what Brompton fits to the 8-speed G Line. We buy KMC's X9 in bulk (116 links uncut) and, for a G Line, cut each one to your bike's exact link count before it ships.
How it works
- Check your chainring. A G Line ships with a 54T ring; if you've fitted a smaller one to lower the gearing, count its teeth (usually stamped on it).
- Pick the matching length above. Not sure? The Brompton chain guide has the table and a quick-answer picker, or email a photo of your chainring to info@clevercycles.com and we'll tell you.
- We cut it to that length in our workshop and ship it ready to fit. It comes with a KMC MissingLink, so it goes on without a chain tool.

What to expect in the box
This is bulk chain. It arrives in a plain bag — no retail packaging, no printed instructions. It's the same chain KMC sells at retail; you're just not paying for the packaging.
Fit new sprockets at the same time
Chain and sprockets wear into each other, and a new chain on a worn cassette might skip under load. If the old chain measured past 0.75% on a chain checker, budget for a cassette too. The chainring lasts several chains and only needs replacing if its teeth are visibly hooked.
Riding an A Line or C Line (1-, 2-, 3- or 6-speed)? Those take the wider 8-speed chain — see the KMC X8 bulk chain. P Line, T Line and 4/12-speed bikes take the SL Advance chain.
In Portland? Bring the bike in and we'll measure, fit the chain while you wait, and check the rest of the drivetrain.
