One of One, by Curtis Bullock
There are Bromptons, and then there are Bromptons you can’t stop looking at. This is one of the second kind: a hand-painted, one-of-a-kind Brompton by Portland artist Curtis Bullock, better known to the bike world as @SaveThePostalService.
Who is Curtis?
Curtis didn’t start out as a bike painter. He earned a doctorate in education and spent years as a teacher and school principal before turning to art full time, and you can still see that in his work: big, bold, joyful color, held together by careful structure. His influences include Pop Art, Memphis Design, Roy Lichtenstein, LEGO, and Pee-wee’s Playhouse, along with the saturated colors of the ’80s and ’90s.
And the Instagram name? His first big art project was making handmade envelopes and stationery out of damaged and discarded books, because everyone loves getting mail from people they like. The name stuck, even as the canvases got bigger and started having wheels.
Today Curtis splits his time between Portland and Milan, and his bikes have shown up all over the cycling world: a custom Santa Cruz Stigmata for Chris King, a pop-art Vitus mountain bike shown at Sea Otter, and a collection of six artist-edition Omnium frames that launched in Copenhagen and went to dealers across Europe. Now he’s painted Bromptons for us, right here in Portland.
What goes into each one
Every bike starts as a bare frame and a blank idea. Curtis sketches and iterates, testing color combinations until the pattern works with the Brompton’s shapes, its curves, joints, and that famous fold. Then the real work begins: masks laid down layer by layer, and multiple coats of paint, one color at a time. Nothing is printed and nothing is a decal. Each frame is finished in a smooth matte clear coat, and if you run your fingers across it, you’ll still feel the faint edges of the paint underneath. It’s the closest you’ll get to touching the art in a museum.
When the paint is done, the frame comes back to our shop, where our mechanics build it up from scratch, so it rides exactly like the Brompton it is: folding in seconds, rolling into the train, the office, the café.
Each bike is signed by Curtis. No two will ever be the same.
Ride it. Fold it. Look at it a lot.
