Description
A Poodle With a Nose for Purpose — and Truffles
Rosie is a brown poodle with an extraordinary sense of smell — extraordinary even by dog standards. She lives with a loving family who runs a chocolate truffle shop, which presents an obvious problem: chocolate is poisonous to dogs, so the one thing filling the shop with the most irresistible aroma in the world is completely off limits. Not one to settle, Rosie hops on her bike and sets out for the city, cycling through a series of jobs — museum guard dog, show dog, guide dog — that never quite fit. Then she spots an ad for a truffle hound. It turns out there are two kinds of truffles, and the fungi variety, buried underground and coveted by chefs, requires exactly the kind of nose Rosie happens to have.
Jessie Hartland illustrates the whole adventure in vibrant gouache — a bustling, slightly zany world of upright-walking animals, hidden background details, and peachy-pink and green city streets that reward slow looking. The story wraps with Rosie back home, her family's shop now selling both kinds of truffles, and two recipes appended for young readers with adventurous tastes: one chocolate, one fungi. For ages 4 to 8.
A Story About Finding Where Your Talents Actually Belong
- Rosie's adventure takes her through multiple mismatched jobs before landing on the one built for her specific, unusual skill — a story about purpose without heavy-handedness.
- Introduces kids to the real tradition of truffle-hunting dogs and pigs, and explains the difference between chocolate and fungi truffles in terms that make sense at ages 4-8.
- Illustrated throughout in lively gouache paintings — a busy, detail-packed world that gives young readers plenty to find on repeated reads.
- Features Rosie's interracial human family in a warm, matter-of-fact way that reflects real family diversity.
- Rosie walks upright, rides a bike, and navigates the city solo — a protagonist kids can project onto easily and adults will find genuinely funny.
- Two recipes included at the back: chocolate truffles and truffle noodles, both accessible enough to actually make.
- Oversized landscape format (11" x 8.5") lets the illustrations breathe and works well for group read-alouds.
