"Rest is Not a Crime" is a three-color, hand-pulled linocut from California-based printmaker Shang Daili. The image — a cat curled up and asleep on a floating lotus / lily pad — pairs with a line that her customers tend to repeat back to her: rest is not a crime. It's a small print that does quiet work on a wall, the kind of piece people hang above a desk, in a bedroom, in a studio, or anywhere they want a low-volume daily reminder to slow down.
The print is made the slow way. Three separate carved linoleum blocks, each printed in registration by hand, building the image one color layer at a time. The inks are solvent-free printmaking inks made from linseed oil and lightfast pigments, printed onto 300 gsm acid-free cotton paper with hand-torn deckle-style edges. The combination — heavy cotton paper, traditional oil-based relief inks, multi-layer registration — is what separates a hand-pulled print from a digital reproduction, and is also why each impression has small, individual variations. Available as a print on its own or framed in black wood with museum glass.
